Anonymous
Hi All…
My 10 months and has had a rough time the past few months…He was gaining weight fine until about the time his seizure activity started and they started Keppra. He has been uppped a few time over the course of the past few months after illnesses and increase in seizures…He is now having the most seizure activity, about 10 a day, 1-3 seconds in length and this past week he lost weight. I am wondering if the Keppra dosage is having an effect on his appetite and if the activity is affecting his eating? I started him on solids a few weeks ago, he is fully breastfed, and promplty took him off when the activity increased thinking it might have been the foods, but I don’t think there is a correlation. Can anyone help me with some ideas…both for seizure control, as he is on his max on Keppra and weight gain ideas…
THANK YOU!

March 1, 2012 at 6:13 pm #9200Sorry to hear about your son’s seizure activity, I hope it gets better. I did have a question on the seizure activity that you said happens for 1-3 seconds, what do you notice during this time? I have been thinking of getting my son tested for seizure activity but don’t know if I am noticing things that are normal because I’m so worried about seizures.
As far as weight gain, I’ve heard that parents use high calorie diets by adding in butter or other things to food. Or parents have used calorie additives such as Duocal to help weight gain. I have not tried either yet but things that I am considering. Peyton has been gaining weight so far on this own at a good pace.
March 2, 2012 at 4:15 am #9201At around six months Isabellas seizure activity started. The first one was triggered by a fever that was a status seizure, tegretal and epilum were given to her. After the medication started it seemed that her seizure activity got worse, no status ones (but usually only fevers trigger those)but the smaller ones lasting a few seconds to a few minutes. No abnormal seizure activity was recorded with our eegs, we had like 5+ done, two of them being 24hours and video recorded.
After weaning and adding here and there we finally found the right combination that stopped all activity. At the worst we had like 12 small seizures a day. It took three and so months but we were lucky to find that Epilum and Clobazan was the combo needed.
Wilderones, when Isabella’s seizure first started, I swear I thought it was the sweet potato that triggered it!! I even asked my Neuro about it and was sooo confident that it was. Then I realized that the seizures just kept coming
then I knew I was wrong. But it still took me another 6 months before giving her sweet potato again
Jill, what I can say is that prior to Isabella’s first seizure she did a lot of rapid blinks with her eyes. It was like 3-5 fast blinks, I thought dust was in her eyes or something. Then the day of her first seizure, she did the fast blinking plush a quick backward jerking of the head.
Hope this was useful! X
