<p>Any advice of baby discovering self? I think this is what has been hindering Ansel’s development, apart from getting the seizures under control. He is not very aware of his hands, does not grab his feet or curl up and roll from side to side. He has just begun rubbing his eyes and scratching his head…but I think these things are key to getting him to understand his own body before other development can begin, i.e. rolling, reaching for toys etc. Any input or exercises would be helpul, thank you!

The advice we were given with Mia was to initially concentrate on ‘hands to mid-line’. With Ansel lying on his back try dangling a toy or rattle so that it brushes against his hands, it will take time but he will start to realise that there is a connection between the sensation of touch and the proximity of the toy to his little hands. I know first-hand how demoralising slow progress can be but stick with it and I am sure one day it will just click for Ansel, as it did for Mia.

When Fiona’s on her back, she still has a tendency to clench her hands at her sides (she’s 9.5 months), especially when she’s in certain moods–tired, a little tight, etc. So we were told to do light hand massage and put her on her side with a toy. Again, 5 months ago she had no interest in a toy, so that was frustrating to hear. But now she’s reaching for things, grabbing, rolling… so give it time. I hope this helps!

Oh, and as with the physical therapy discussion that’s happening right now too, we were also told to focus on the head first. Apparently development occurs top-down. The head-neck, then core, then legs. Grabbing feet and rolling side to side is Fiona’s new trick, and I was told it’s because her core has developed enough for her to pull her legs up. But it took lots of tummy time, lots of idle-resting periods during tummy time, and lots of calling her and encouraging her to lift her head. In other words, Ansel will probably need to lift his head with good regularity and strength when on his belly before he has the core strength to side-roll. But hands you can definitely work on concurrently with head-neck strength. I hope this makes sense!

Ah, one more thing (sorry to keep posting): I think it helped Fiona when I kissed her feet. She wasn’t aware of her feet until very recently, but I kept lifting her feet up so her legs were perpendicular to her body, kissing her feet, and saying “Feet, feet!” She sometimes smiled or giggled at this. I did this a lot, mostly because her feet are so freaking cute! But gradually she started getting into her pant legs (at her knee) and then we started putting rings on her feet, and now she’s found them. It also helped to remove her socks–this helped to wake her feet up, and I noticed her exploring one foot with the other, even when she was busy doing something else–looking somewhere, trying to swipe something, eating, etc. So those are just some more ideas….
