Kendall big SmileAbout this time last year, I made quite an extensive list of the developmental milestones that Kendall had reached at the ripe age of 5. As we well know, all of our children are quite different and each one has their own way of being who they are.

After reviewing this list again 12 months later, it appears that most of her new skills come by way of putting words together and being more opinionated in her views on life. So, for this year as we near her 6th birthday on July 18th, I want to list the new sentences and phrases that Kendall has been sharing with us. Her cognitive abilities to put together new phrases and sentences have been by far her greatest achievements this past year.

Here are her top 25 phrases:

  1. I gotta go potty. This one is HUGE! We’re right there with her buying into the plan. Maybe 2-3 months and we’re golden!
  2. I’m so proud of you! If you go potty, you get the praise! She often tells me how proud she is of me when I do my business (and also what a good girl I am).
  3. Go to the pool? Kendall loves to swim and steal everyone’s sunscreen.
  4. Go to hot tub? Of course, the hot tub is more attractive once it gets a little chilly in the pool.
  5. I want to see me. YouTube videos of Kendall are fun to watch, even for her.
  6. I’m me, I’m Kendall. Just in case we didn’t know that Kendall and Me aren’t the same person!
  7. Knock Knock..who’s there… The punchline is almost always the same, but she understands the whole concept including the laughing part.
  8. My turn. If someone else gets a try, then Kendall has to also get a turn.
  9. No night night. To this day, she greatly resists falling asleep in her bed. It’s a major struggle for us.
  10. What say? She listens to everything and needs clarification at times.
  11. KK my sister. Cailen is referred to as “KK”. Carsen is “ah-ice”. They answer to it, so it works for everyone!
  12. I’m so hungry. We’re not sure if she means it, but it comes up quite regularly around dinner time, accompanied by the next phrase.
  13. I want agacago (avocado). Most food is referred to avocado. Sprinkle “cookie” and “yogurt” in there and we have a complete diet.
  14. Go to school see my teacher? Kendall loves school and asks this question almost every morning when we wake her up.
  15. You buckle me? When Kendall goes to school, she gets buckled on the bus. Nice association!
  16. See my friends? When you go to school, you get to see your friends. Kendall has tons of friends. It seems that everywhere we go, someone recognizes Kendall.
  17. Please help me She uses this often and knows exactly when she needs someone to give her a hand.
  18. Go play hockey me? Air hockey is one of her favorite games to play.
  19. Go see yucky yucky germs? Her love/hate relationship with this yo gabba gabba video is quite puzzling. It terrifies her, but she always asks for it.
  20. Want to go home. Kendall LOVES to be at home.
  21. Go get car? Her favorite toy is her car that she can sit in and ride around in.
  22. Daddy’s truck/Momma’s car? She associates our cars with ownership even though we share the vehicles between us.
  23. I don’t like that. This one is new. We love that she can tell us what she likes and doesn’t like.
  24. Go see Momma? Mom is her favorite person in the whole world.
  25. I love you Daddy/Mommy. The most fulfilling thing she could ever say to us, and she says it with meaning…

She’s doing so great and we couldn’t be more proud of her accomplishments this year.

That’s great! Good job Kendall and Happy Birthday baby! <3 guys just out of curiosity, did she make vowel sounds or coo or babble as a baby? What was her "baby" communication like? Liam has never babbled or coo'd but he used to vocalize all the time. I guess I'm just trying to figure out if I will be lucky enough to hear his little voice someday 🙂

Kendall really didn’t talk much for the first couple of years. We weren’t even sure that she would talk at all. It took her forever to laugh as well.

She is just lovely. And how wonderful and fortunate it is that she is communicating the way that she is! I know all of our children are unique and different, but it’s stories like these that give us hope. Please keep them coming. 🙂
